Reed Leads Alabama on Final Day of John Mitchell Alabama Relays

Published by Alabama SID March 21, 2015

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Defending NCAA and United States men's discus champion Hayden Reed of the University of Alabama successfully defended his title in his signature event, highlighting a successful day of competition for Crimson Tide athletes on Saturday afternoon, the final day of competition at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays at the Sam Bailey Track Complex on the UA campus.

Alabama athletes won four events on Saturday to wrap up the meet, giving the Tide eight event victories over the course of the three-day meet. Crimson Tide athletes achieved 15 personal bests and had two performances that rank in the all-time Crimson Tide top 10 during the meet. On Saturday, Alabama athletes won four events: the men's 800 meters, men's discus, women's invitational 100 meters and women's distance medley relay.

"I was pleased with how we competed today, particularly in the field events as Hayden set a great example for our team today with a victory," said Alabama head coach Dan Waters. "This was a very good start to our season. We got a lot of people involved and we were able to perform at a high level in several events very early in the season."

Reed opened his 2015 outdoor season successfully in the men's discus with a best of 196 feet, 6 inches (59.90 meters) ahead of Tennessee's Tavis Bailey (191-7; 58.40m). Reed's winning mark ranks just outside of the all-time Alabama top 10 in the event. One of Reed's teammates, Daniel Haugh competed unattached and finished fifth (176-9; 53.87m) while Alabama's Joe Williams was eighth (174-3; 53.11m).
